DEFINITION 

Aluminum is a lightweight, silvery-white metal known for its durability, corrosion resistance, and high electrical/thermal conductivity. It is widely used in transportation, construction, packaging (cans/foil), and electronics. Found commonly as bauxite ore in nature, it is produced through the Hall-Héroult process (electrolysis) and is infinitely recyclable, making it sustainable. 

Physical Properties of Aluminum: 

• Density: Low-density, lightweight metal (approx. 1/3 that of steel).

• Color/Appearance: Silvery-white.

• Conductivity: Excellent conductor of heat and electricity.

• Durability: High corrosion resistance due to a natural protective oxide layer.

• Versatility: Highly malleable and ductile. 

Common Uses of Aluminum:

Occurrence in Nature: 

• Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element in Earth's crust (about 8% by weight).

• Due to its high reactivity, it is never found as a free metal in nature.

• It is found combined with other elements in minerals like bauxite, cryolite, and alunite, primarily in rocks and clay.

• The process involves refining bauxite into alumina (aluminum oxide) and then separating it using the Hall-Héroult electrolytic process, which consumes significant electricity.
